For Anti-Aging, Think Antioxidants

Many researchers in the skin care field are focusing on how to incorporate antioxidants more effectively into products and treatments. Antioxidants are highlighted for their ability to reverse the signs of aging.

Aging of the skin is caused by “oxidative” processes and related free radical damage that result from UV sunlight, smog, toxins, cigarette smoke, X-rays, drugs, and other stressors. While we are young, our skin is exposed to the same damage, but we possess sufficient cellular energy for DNA repair and cell renewal. As we age, there is increased wear and tear, while at the same time our internal energy for cell repair and renewal is diminished and naturally occurring antioxidant enzymes are less available.

One way of mitigating the effects of skin damage is to increase levels of protective antioxidants through a diet rich in fruits and vegetables or by direct topical application. Science clearly substantiates the fact that topically applied antioxidants confer significant protection and can even partially reverse some aspects of skin aging, especially vitamins C and E.

Vitamin C (citric acid) is required for collagen synthesis, which keeps skin firm and elastic. Vitamin C also plays a vital role in skin repair. It is important to know that L-ascorbic is the only form of vitamin C that can penetrate skin layers and provide these benefits.

Vitamin E (alpha tocopherol or tocotrenol) can also help reduce wrinkles and make your skin look and feel smoother. Vitamin E can also soothe dry, rough skin. When combined with vitamin C in a lotion, it's highly protective against sun damage.

Ferulic Acid (FA) is a little-known botanical antioxidant found in the seeds and leaves of most plants, especially in the brans of grasses such as wheat, rice, and oats. It acts synergistically with other antioxidants, giving them extra potency. In addition, exposure to UV light increases FA’s antioxidant activity.

Many fruit and tea extracts included in body care products contain these antioxidants: read the label carefully. Remember to exfoliate regularly to experience the maximum benefits when you apply them to your skin.

SkinCeuticals AOX+: SkinCeuticals recently launched its newly enhanced line of patented Vitamin C serums with AOX+ advanced antioxidant technology, which incorporates the benefits of Ferulic Acid.
