Wellness and the Cycle of the Seasons
As winter approaches, the days become shorter, daytime and nighttime temperatures drop, and barometric pressure become unstable. These changes in the weather can mean increased back pain, flare ups of arthritis and old injuries, and aggravations of other internal conditions. Why is this?
According to researchers and immunologists, barometric pressure influences the balance of our autonomic nervous system, which controls virtually all of our internal organs. Our nervous system shifts more towards sympathetic and granulocyte dominance (active mode) on high pressure days, and parasympathetic and lymphocyte dominance (relaxation mode) on low pressure days.
This explains why we can feel more relaxed or down on rainy days, and energetic on dry, sunny days. Chinese medicine has embraced these concepts for thousands of years.

There is a new field of study called chronobiology, which has begun to examine the fluctuations in our biological processes related to the daily and seasonal rhythms of nature. For example, studies in this field have shown that chemotherapy that is adjusted for seasonal fluctuations is more effective and side effects are minimized, compared to traditional chemotherapy administration.
Autumn and the move into winter is a season of transition and can be stressful—and the physiological stress caused by the rhythm of nature adds to this.
During this busy time in our lives, it’s important to remain aware of what our bodies are telling us, and to seek balance and incorporate wellness in our daily routines in order to cope with these environmental changes.
Remember, it’s not just the holiday season, it’s nature talking to us!
